When families think about primary school, there is often a strong focus on the early years. Prep is an exciting milestone, and understandably it attracts plenty of attention. But as a principal, I would argue that Years 5 and 6 are just as important.
These are the years when children begin to step into who they are becoming.
In the upper primary years, students start to think more deeply, take greater ownership of their learning and develop the confidence to lead. They are preparing for secondary school, but more importantly, they are developing the habits, character and resilience that will shape their future.
At Our Lady of the Rosary School, we believe the best education develops both the mind and the heart. It's what we call Smarts & Big Hearts.
The "Smarts" are important. Families want to know their children are being challenged and supported to achieve their personal best. Our recent NAPLAN results are a reflection of the strong learning culture we have built at OLR Kenmore, where high-quality teaching, high expectations and genuine care work hand in hand. Academic success doesn't happen by accident. It comes from creating classrooms where students are engaged, curious and encouraged to strive for excellence.
But academic achievement alone isn't enough.
The world our children are growing up in demands much more than strong test results. Young people need to know how to communicate effectively, solve problems, work collaboratively and show empathy. They need confidence, resilience and a strong sense of self.
That's where the "Big Hearts" come in.
In Years 5 and 6, our students are given opportunities to lead, mentor younger students, contribute to service initiatives and become role models within our school community. They learn that leadership is not about a badge or a title. It is about how we treat others, how we include those around us and how we use our gifts to make a positive difference.
These experiences help students discover that success is not measured solely by academic results, but also by the way they contribute to their community.
